Marlow's 'one-way' pavements explained by town council

The measure came into play on Monday, June 1, and has been met with a mixed reaction with those who live in the town.

However, leader of the Town Council Jocelyn Towns, has reminded those living in Marlow need to be ‘aware and act responsibly’.

She said: “Marlow Town Council needed to act quickly to help residents.

“The funding had been announced but it was going to take a while before any of it filtered down to the town council.

“So, we decided, after discussion with and advice from Transport for Bucks, to introduce a ‘pedestrian one-way flow’ to help with social distancing.

“Something we could do immediately, whilst working on other measures to help our Victorian town manage during this awful pandemic.

“This is an advisory, voluntary action.

“Marlow is a Victorian town, with a number of narrow pavements throughout, so we must all be aware and act responsibly.

“I mentioned we are looking at other measures and working with Buckinghamshire Council and would confirm that:

• We have had two parking bays suspended at the bottom of the High Street on the west side to help pedestrians, where the pavement narrows, to enhance safe distancing.

• We also have suspension of a further two bays agreed, to install pop up bike racks, which are currently being sourced.

• We have banners going up in the High Street and Spittal Street, alerting traffic to be aware of pedestrians crossing.

• We are also looking at installing ‘20 is plenty’ signage around the town centre, whilst we review the process for formalising a 20mph zone.

“We hope that the advisory measures introduced will help residents as we continue to work on further options with Buckinghamshire Council.”

It is not known how long the system will be in place.
