THE eagerly awaited Windsor town council (WTC) has been branded a ‘good idea’ by MP Adam Afriyie.

The Conservative parliamentarian for Windsor said he will be following the progress of a WTC after the leader of the Royal Borough, councillor Andrew Johnson (Conservative: Hurley and Walthams), announced at a full virtual council meeting on May 26 that the authority will take formal steps to launch a governance review – a report presented to full council on how an unparished area will be operated and governed – before receiving a petition.

Mr Afriyie said: “Windsor is a beautiful town with a unique identity, and local democracy through a town council does seem like a good idea, if this is what people are calling for. It is right that this is part of a governance review and I will be following the matter with interest.”

A petition set up by Richard Endacott – which has gathered more than 2,000 signatures – campaigned for a WTC to be established for Windsor and its people to have a greater voice and representation such as in planning applications and to have a say on parish council precepts.

The Observer asked our readers if a Windsor town council would be great for residents and 32 people responded.

Seventy-two per cent agreed it is a good idea, 19 per cent said Windsor is better off without one, and nine per cent said they did not know.

The governance review will be debated and voted on at full council in July and, if passed, a formal report will be produced within one year before it is then brought back to full council to be either approved, denied or amended.
