Science experiments, PE challenges and baking are all part of life still for pupils at St Bernard's Preparatory School at Hawtrey Close, Slough - even if it is all having to be done at home.

The school is holding classes on line but headteacher Nathan Cheesman said that does not mean pupils have to spend their time in front of a screen.

PE sessions will see pupils encouraged out into their gardens to practise an exercise they have just been shown by the PE teacher. While science lessons might find them filling cannisters in the kitchen with water to see for themselves how the laws of physics work - after detailed instructions of course.

Headteacher Nathan Cheesman said: "We have two teachers at each session. One will be teaching from the front, while a second teacher can work with the children discussing any problems they might have with what they are doing. Children can also consult with each other."

Proper lessons involve proper rules being observed, even at home.

Mr Cheesman said: "There is a code of conduct for parents as well as pupils. We don't want parents hovering in the background answering questions. We expect pupils to get dressed and come downstairs - not expect to work in their bedrooms."

The weekly assembly still happens and parents might be surprised to catch Mr Cheesman bursting into song or even doing a bit of 'dad dancing'.

But pupils will not. He said: "They know that can happen at assembly."
