A trail blazing law student from Hungary inspired an audience of young people from Slough last week.

Brigitta Balogh is from a Roma background and was invited to the town by the charity Aik Saath, which brings together young people from different faiths and cultures across Slough.

She is on course to be the UK's first barrister from a European Roma background and is an active committee member of the Association of Women Barristers.

Slough and Eton C of E Business and Enterprise College was Ms Balogh’s first stop on the day. She had lunch with the school’s Roma students and gave two inspirational talks to over 150 students.

Headteacher Peter Collins said: “It is really important to us that our students are exposed to people from a range of backgrounds who have overcome all sorts of barriers to achieve success. Ms Balogh was inspirational and showed a genuine passion for the legal career and women’s rights and was a fantastic champion for the Roma community."

Later in the day, Ms Balogh met more members of Slough’s Roma community at Aik Saath’s High Street headquarters before ending the day at a Youth Engagement Slough (YES) club in Cippenham.

Chief Executive of Aik Saath, Rob Deeks said, “We are enormously grateful to Brigitta for taking the time to come to Slough to inspire young people here. She helped the students understand that with drive and determination they can achieve their dreams. We hope that all the young people that heard her story feel encouraged to reach their potential and have exciting, fulfilling futures. We would also like to thank Slough and Eton for being such fantastic hosts.”
