The campaign to restore Windsor Parish Church's organ to its former glory is intensifying - with just £40,000 still needing to hit the £204,000 target.

Director of music at the church John Halsey said: "The organ is in urgent need of complete restoration. Until recently, the instrument was making a glorious contribution to concerts and special events, including school carol services, Royal Borough civic services, weddings and funerals, as well as in regular Sunday services. But its condition is becoming very poor indeed."

But organisations across the town have rallied round and more than 80 per cent of the money needed has now been raised.

Mr Halsey said: "In raising this figure, the church has received great support from trust funds both local and national, from schools and other community organisations that use the church, and from parishioners and other individuals who have a connection with the church and its music.

"The Parish is now intensifying its efforts to raise the remaining £40,000 through special events and by approaching trust funds, community organisations and individuals."

Anyone who would still like to make a contribution can send a cheque payable to 'PCC Windsor Parish Church with All Saints' to Michael Harding (churchwarden) at 1 Errington Drive, Windsor, SL4 5EG, marking the reverse of the cheque “Parish Church Organ Appeal.”

The restoration will be carried out by Bishop & Son, who are the contractors recommended by the Diocese of Oxford.

*All Saints' Church, in Frances Road, Windsor has been holding its own organ appeal and has successfully raised the £18,500 needed to restore its own instrument to full working order.

A 'final' fundraising concert will take place at the church 7.30pm on Saturday, November 2 which will also serve as an opportunity to thank the donors. The concert of eighteenth century music for flute, harpsichord and organ will be performed by John Halsey (who is organist and Choirmaster at All Saints' and the Parish Church) and Frances Road resident Jenny Thomas.

Tickets are £10 available after Sunday services or from 01628 602706.
