Locally based athletes inspired 100 schoolchildren from primary schools in Slough at a sports day held at the Centre in Farnham Road.

The Centre, which is operated by Everyone Active in partnership with Slough Borough Council, hosted the Sporting Champions Sports Day on Wednesday.

Pupils were joined by boxers Hassan and Adam Azim, as well as badminton player Aryan Lad, who were on hand for demonstrations, support and encouragement.

The event is part of an initiative being run by Everyone Active that aims to engage children in a range of sporting opportunities from a younger age. All three athletes inspiring the group are supported by Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme, a talent-development programme for up-and-coming athletes.

Hassan, Youth Olympic bronze medallist and Adam, European Junior Champion, kicked off the event with an impressive boxing demonstration before the children had their turn to get involved in boxing, badminton, football, street dance and multi-sports sessions.

Hassan Azim said: “It’s been a great day teaching the kids about boxing. Days like these are so important to get children active and interested in a range of sports.

“The children looked like they had lots of fun and I hope that today helps them to move forward with the sporting activities they enjoyed, and achieve their own sporting goals whatever they may be.”

Louise Chaves, Regional Activities Manager at Everyone Active said: “It was a pleasure to offer a community initiative that engages children in staying active and also inspires them by showing what opportunities are available in the world of sport.

“Fantastic fun was had by all and we’d like to thank everyone who came along, including the athletes who proved an inspiration to the children.”

Everyone Active Sporting Champions scheme provides funding and support for talented athletes across England. The leisure operator has teamed up with its athletes on the programme to deliver the sports days, which are designed to educate primary-aged children about different types of sports.
