A beautiful altarpiece designed by the great Victorian author Thomas Hardy will be the big attraction when Windsor's All Saints Church in Frances Road holds open days every Saturday morning this month.

The altarpiece was hidden behind wooden panelling and forgotten for decades.

It was rediscovered by church regular Stuart Tunstall who spotted some uneven wooden panelling behind the altar, while trying to find the foundation stone that had been laid by Queen Victoria's daughter Vicky.

Lying on his back and shining his torch through a tiny gap at the panelling's base he caught a glimpse of something that took his breath away.

The panelling has been removed and the alterpiece is now the church's shining glory. Between 10am and 1pm on Saturday, September 14, 21 and 28 there will be a chance for people to view it and enjoy a chat with local 'experts' on the scene. Refreshments will be provided
