SLOUGH Town joint-manager Jon Underwood has explained that securing all three points is more important than a good performance in their first game of the new season, writes Rob Stevens.

The Rebels

get the new campaign in the National League South under way with a visit to Arbour Park from Dorking Wanderers this Saturday (3pm).

Underwood

believes the performance will not mean a lot and he hopes Slough can nick the points against a side full of optimism having won the Isthmian League Premier Division last term.

He told the Observer: “Everyone wants to win their first game and Dorking will be the same. They are a club on the rise and have had a few great years, plus they’ve got some very good individual players.

“We think we know what we need to about them. We know some of their strengths and some areas we might hurt them.

“It won’t be an easy game because any promoted side comes on the crest of a wave. We’ve been their ourselves and you start the season full of optimism.

“The performance will not mean a lot and it won’t matter if we win a scruffy 1-0 - I would be delighted with that. All we’re looking for on Saturday is to try and nick three points. Whether we play well or poorly, we just need to try and win the game.

“It should be a good game Dorking are a good side that like to play football. It will be a good tight game but we will say that 50 times during the season.

“This league was tight week-in-week-out last season and it will be the same this year. Teams will match each other so there will be a lot of draws and narrow wins.”
