The long-awaited Eton Information Centre has opened quietly.

Windsor has had its own tourist information centre for many years and the idea of Eton getting one was first mooted two years ago as part of the Eton Walkway project.

Eton College and the Royal Borough made contributions - the college allowing the site of the former Eton Wine Shop at 67 High Street to be used, while the Royal Borough teamed with businesses and organisations in the town to fund the refurbishment.

The project had input from 200 people in the town.

Plans for a formal opening are underway but in the meantime the centre has been operating on a low key basis, already providing advice and guidance to nearly 1,000 people in the first few weeks of operation, opening just Thursdays to Sundays from 11am to 3.30pm. It also boasts a small shop and Eton College teddy bears are among its top offerings.

Attractions promoted in the centre include three Eton College museums open on Sunday afternoons, the Eton Walkway - a two mile circular route connecting 18 points of heritage interest in the town, the Barnes Pool area for wildlife and a variety of walks and cycle routes in neighbouring Eton Wick.

I’m delighted that The Royal Borough is part of this exciting project. We are incredibly lucky to have a wealth of heritage and beauty  in Eton and the Information Centre will give visitors greater access to enjoy and appreciate Eton.

Cllr Samantha Rayner, councillor for Eton and Castle and deputy leader of the Royal Borough said: "I’m delighted that The Royal Borough is part of this exciting project.
