Air cadets in Slough are celebrating after being crowned the most improved squadron in the south east.

The 153 (Slough) Squadron Air Cadets were also named the most improved out of 26 squadrons in the Thames Valley.

Commanding officer Flt Lt Luke Baker said although they did not win the national competition, the squadron is only one of six most improved in the country.

Speaking about the accolade, he said: “It was a total surprise. You always think there is someone better out there than you. I was shocked when I heard.

“All the cadets were really, really pleased.

“We have had quite a bit of success this year and so this has just added to that really.”

Flt Lt Baker, who has been with the squadron for seven years – two-and-a-half of those as a commander – says he has seen it go from strength to strength.

He added: “We have significantly grown in cadet numbers and staffing numbers, we are doing activities the cadets have never taken part in before – all of our cadets have achieved so much.

“We are doing more in the community than ever before – we took over the running of the Remembrance parade in Slough and we did a lot of work with the horticultural show.

“We are thriving.”
