A GEORGIAN villa in South Bucks used for one of the most famous films in the history of post-war cinema is on the market through the Gerrards Cross office of Strutt & Parker.

The guide price of £6.5 million includes the seven-bedroom main house, four cottages (two are listed), a coach house and stable block, Victorian ice-house, a charming folly, cart shed, all-weather tennis court, glass house with grapevine, all within the grounds extending to 40 acres.

The opening shots of the trailer for the 1945 movie Blythe Spirit are taken from the garden of Denham Mount looking up towards the house where the French doors of the drawing room open onto a veranda.

Almost 75 years later, the current owner’s agents chose the same view of the house for the photograph on the front of the brochure. It hasn’t changed.

The first months of peacetime Britain were particularly momentous for Margaret Rutherford.

Not only did she play the eccentric medium Madame Arcati in the film which made her name but at the age of 53 after a courtship of 15 years she married fellow actor 45 year old Stringer Davis.

They bought a house in Chalfont St Peter where they lived happily ever after until her death in 1972.

Blythe Spirit was a huge hit.

The cast included Rex Harrison, Kay Hammond and Constance Cummings, who were some of the film industry’s biggest and best actors and actresses around that era, with the famous Pinewood Studios in extremely close proximity..

Some of the important scenes in the original screen adaptation of Noel Coward’s stage play were on the veranda that’s still there today.

Denham Mount was built in the early 1800s by Robert Lugar “a seriously minded young man” who went on to gain a reputation as “the country gentleman’s architect.” The architect was pleased with how the house in Blacksmiths Lane, Denham turned out.

In 1811 he noted: “This pleasing retreat offers everything the mind of taste could require to produce comfort and cheerfulness.”

There are five bedrooms and three bathrooms including the master suite and guest suite on the first floor and two more bedrooms plus bathroom and secondary kitchen in the staff flat on the second floor.

Downstairs are four principal reception rooms as well as the more recently built morning room/playroom and a glorious garden room extending to almost 50ft end to end.
