MBE
BEING made an MBE has come as a welcome boost to veteran Royal Borough councillor Derek Wilson, after the disappointment of losing his seat at last month's election after almost 20 years.
His involvement with the Conservative party goes back 40 years, leading from chairmanship of Maidenhead Young Conservatives in 1980 to a place on the National Executive in 1987 alongside future political journalist Nick Robinson and future speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow.
Mr Wilson's career with the Royal Borough climaxed with an extended role as lead member for planning.
It has been a tough brief and he has had to face a lot of opposition to proposals in the forthcoming borough plan to build homes on green belt sites.
He said: "I know not everyone supports the current plan. But if we don't come up with an 'up to date' plan as a council we run the risk of having one forced on by Government in which we had no say at all."
He admits the controversy may have contributed to his election defeat this time - but he bounced back after defeat in 1995 to regain the seat in 1997.
Over the years he has also served as a trustee with Maidenhead Citizens' Advice Bureau and chairman of finance at Desborough College as well as board member with Housing Solutions Ltd which runs the Royal Borough's housing stock in Maidenhead.
Away from the council his career has taken him from consumer electronics at Lord Sugar's company Amstrad and later Panasonic to a change of direction and a new career in the pharmaceutical industry.
He said: "I would like to get back on the council but in the meantime I'm delighted and humbled by this honour. I was unaware I was even up for an award."

David Rogers was made an MBE for services to cyber security.
He is the chief executive of the Windsor based Copper Horse mobile and IoT security company as well as being the author of the UK’s Code of Practice for Consumer IoT Security.
IoT stands for The Internet of Things and covers recent developments that give ordinary people increasing control over appliances in their homes such as door locks, lights and labour saving gadgets.
But it also puts us all at risk from cyber crime, and Mr Rogers has worked closely with UK Government departments including the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), as well as leading manufacturers, industry associations and the security research community to create the code.
He said: "There are many talented and passionate individuals involved in cyber security around the globe.
“My role in securing technology is only a tiny part of that overall effort. I am delighted and honoured to be awarded this MBE for services to cyber security.”
