A mysterious plume of smoke rising from the pavement brought out firefighters and Southern Electric workers at 11.15am this morning - and left a big hole in the middle of Queen Street, Maidenhead.
A thermal image camera was used to pinpoint the source of the trouble and the pavement was taped off, while shops in the street had their power cut off as a large hole was dug.
Buses and vehicles were still able to use the road though.
The cause of the problem has yet to be revealed.
