PEOPLE who provide unpaid care for a friend, relative or neighbour can look forward to a number of events next month.

National Carers Week (June 10-14) is being marked in Reading, with this year's theme being 'Getting Carers Connected in their Communities'.

It is estimated that 12,000 people provide unpaid care for someone in Reading, due to illness, disability and other conditions.

Councillor Tony Jones, lead member for Adult Social Care, said: "There are some great free events and activities on offer.

"Many of us will be a carer at some point in our lives. Carers play an essential role in our community and they deserve the best advice and support in their role as well as help in maintaining their own independent lives.

"Some people may not see themselves as carers or know they have specific rights and that they are entitled to additional social care support.

"I would encourage carers to come along to these events to find out more about support they and their loved ones can get to make the most of life."
