The traditional 21 gun salute in the Long Walk to mark the Queen’s birthday came a day late this year.
The event usually happens on the Queen’s actual birthday. But this year her big day fell on Easter Sunday and the explosions from the borough’s mini-cannons would not have been appropriate, as Easter Mattins was held at St George’s Chapel.
Instead, the salute was put off for a day, enabling people to round off their Easter weekend by watching the mini-cannons do their stuff while children in the crowd enjoyed a final treat before going back to school - being allowed to light the fuse under the careful guidance of Borough Bombardier John Matthews.
