Slough is among the areas in the south east with the highest number of smokers, figures reveal.

A total of 16.6 per cent of the population in Slough smokes, while the success rate of those who attempt to quit the habit is 3.42 per cent.

Slough has the fourth highest smoking rate in the south east – following Brighton and Hove, which has a smoking rate of 18 per cent, Medway, 17.6 per cent and Southampton, 17.4 per cent.

Brighton and Hove also have low quit rates – however Medway has the third highest quit rate in the South East at 3.44 per cent.

Despite the high smoking rates in some areas – the south east has the lowest number of smoking-related hospital admissions in England.

Wokingham has the lowest smoking rate nationally, as well as in the south east – with 8.2 per cent of the population choosing to smoke.

Bucks has the second lowest smoking rate in the south east, followed by Oxfordshire with 10.7 per cent, according to Public Health England figures.
