One of Slough's six Parent Champions has received a national award at a conference in London.

Sumaira Iqbal won the Parent Champion Volunteer of the Year in the Newcomer category, having only been in the post for nine months. In the role, Sumaira works with parents across the local community in parent and toddler groups, schools, parks and other early year services.

The scheme aims to promote communication as parents often prefer speaking with other parents as opposed to professionals. Parents are spoken to about family activities and are encouraged to become involved in services provided across the borough.

Sandra Watkins, team leader from the family information service said: “We are extremely proud of our winner Sumaira and indeed all of our parent champions. We are so thankful that our volunteers give their time to help other parents.”

Winner Sumaira Iqbal said: “I was surprised but very happy to win this award, I can’t wait to show this award to my children, and I am really enjoying the whole experience of being a parent champion.”

The council are on the lookout to recruit more parent champions. If you care for at least one child in Slough and are passionate about supporting family’s development the role may be perfectly suited to you. For more information, visit: www.slough.gov.uk/jobs/volunteering-opportunities.aspx.
