More than 19,000 people from across Bracknell and Wokingham have signed a petition to revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU.

The petition, which was created in late February, now has 4,947,867 signatures, with 8,059 residents from Bracknell signing and 11,598 signatures from those in Wokingham.

The online movement, with close to 5 million signatures, has broken the record for the biggest petition on the Parliament's website.

Wokingham MP John Redwood, said: "I, like my Wokingham remain voters, want plenty of cultural, education, business and social contacts with our friends and neighbours across the Channel once we have left the institutions of the Union.

"I have always sought to represent my constituents who wanted Remain, as well as those who voted Leave one the referendum was over. Both sides have written to me urging me to vote against the Withdrawal Agreement, which I duly did."

In December 2018, the Wokingham MP faced criticism after it was suggested he was handed a knighthood in exchange for supporting Theresa May's Withdrawal agreement.

He suggested that the honour has not changed his opinion of the deal put forward by the Prime Minister.

Mp Redwood added: "I did not attempt in the referendum to speak for my constituents as they could all speak for themselves and could choose which of the two official campaigns they wished if any to join.

"It was also of course impossible to both speak for constituents who wanted to remain and who wanted to leave as we had to make a simple choice between these two opposites.
