GAMES, clothes and gadgets might be high on the list of many teenage boys when thinking about birthday presents.

But one selfless Basingstoke teen has decided to help a charitable cause instead of getting gifts.

For his 15th birthday, Jamie Frazer, of Sherfield Park, asked friends and family to donate to Cancer Research UK instead of buying him any presents.

The Costello School student was compelled to raise money for the charity after his grandfather’s battle with the disease and his aunt also having a cancer scare.

Jamie’s mum, Aileen Frazer, told the Gazette: “He couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a cure for cancer, so after having a discussion with him he decided he wanted to help find a cure.”

Thanks to a recent fundraising element added to Facebook – the site encourages people to fundraise for charities by donating the first pound – Jamie was able to set up his own fundraising campaign.

Aileen added: “When he first mentioned it, I was completely shocked, as he usually asks for presents each year.

“But he was adamant that this is what he wanted to do, and he kept saying to me, that if everyone at his school donated some money it would make a real difference.”

She added: “Even though people complain about social media not being good for people, on this occasion it has been fantastic. If Facebook hadn’t made it so easy for him to set up, I don’t think we would have thought to do it otherwise.”

Jamie set himself a target of raising £200 and so far has raised £271.

Now, Jamie is urging people at his school to join in and help raise money for a number of good causes.

Aileen said: “There are a number of local charities that people could support and Jamie keeps talking about getting people to raise money for them.”

Jamie celebrated turning 15 on March 15 with a meal at Miller and Carter.
