Pupils at Eden Girls’ School in Bath Road heard the moving testimony of Holocaust survivor Uri Winterstein as part of the school’s commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day.

Year 10 pupils visited The Curve on William Street on Monday to hear Mr Winterstein describe his experiences.

During the war his father was a member of an underground movement which halted the deportation of Jews from Slovakia for almost two years by bribing key SS officers and government officials.

But later his father, mother and sister were deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. They survived although nine of his family died at Auschwitz.

Year 10 pupils Arooj Ikram said: “It was really sad and emotional to hear about what Mr Winterstein’s family experienced.”

Year 10 pupil Aqsa Chaudhry added: “I learnt that some Nazi soldiers and civilians showed acts of humanity from turning a blind eye to offering places to stay. I hope that continues to happen today.”
