4,000 youngsters from across the country including the 1st Langley Scout Group came together for a special Winter Camp.

Gilwell Park is hosting a number of events over the year to mark the centenary of the activity centre in East London.

The 1st Langley Scout Group travelled to the first of these events which was held on 11-13th January. An array of team building activities aimed at teaching the youngsters how to cope in low temperatures were ran, including putting up tents, cooking and looking after eachother in the cold camping conditions.

Along with battling the cold weather, the Scouts also got to try a range of leisure activities including a 3G swing, abseiling, white water rafting and climbing. Those under the age of 17 also got the chance to get behind the wheel of a car in a specially constructed under 17 driving experience.

One of the scouts Ankur Dalal said: “I’ve not been in the Scouts for long, but I’ve tried lots of new activities such as kayaking and learned scouting skills such as lighting fire with a pair of glasses.

“Scouts lets you have fun but also prepares you for the real world. I just did the leap of faith where I had to jump off a platform that felt like it was 100 feet high. I was nervous as I’m scared of heights, it was terrifying, but I would do it again!”
