A WW1 creative writing competition saw students receive certificates for their hard work in commemorating the First World War.

On Monday, December 17 students at Garth Hill College were presented certificates by Bracknell Town Mayor Councillor Sandra Ingham and three pupils also received highly commended certificates.

The competition aimed to educate and involve pupils in remembering WW1 by getting students involved in art projects and creative writing.

Councillor Gill Birch, deputy leader of Bracknell Town Council said: "The work is breathtaking... Garth Hill did very well, the standard of entries was fabulous."

An exhibition of students artwork was showcased at South Hill Park Arts Centre providing the pupils with a public platform where they displayed their talents.

Key stage 4 pupil Finlay Beasley came first place in the creative writing competition, Diana Slawska, Dominik Steckiewicz and Paige Chappell were highly commended and Roshan Bains came first place in the art competition.

Keith Grainger, principal at Garth Hill College said: "We are very proud of all the pupils who took part in these competitions especially those who have been recognised today - they embraced the opportunity with determination and commitment to achieve well.

"They should be commended for rising to the challenge and for having great inspirations for the future.

"A special thank you goes to the staff who supported all the Garth Hill competition entrants. Your support is very much appreciated."

Students who took part in the creative writing competition were given the opportunity to record their poems at South Hill Parks record studio which was displayed at an event in November. The poems are being pieced together in a book due to be published next year.
