THE shadow of the First World War in Slough is unlikely to fade even though the centenary commemorations on Sunday are now over.
The silhouetted figure of a soldier outside Starbucks is expected to remain there indefinitely.
It provided an appropriate background on Sunday as the two minute silence in the Town Square was followed by a procession to St Mary's Church, Church Street for a civic service of remembrance and a wreath laying.
Later that day two similar silhouetted figures were placed on either side of the beacon lit on Salt Hill Park by the mayor Cllr Paul Sohal.
The council had deliberately kept the advance publicity for the event low key in keeping with the solemnity of the occasion. But there was a large turn out of people who came to watch it being lit and to hear councillors read out the names of the dead as well as reflective poems.
Candles were provided to people who came along.
