HERSCHEL Park in Slough became a place of reflection and memories on Monday as parents who had lost a beloved child gathered to light a candle in their memory.

The Wave of Light event was organised by the Vishaal Foundation - founded by Slough councillor Madhuri Bedi in 2013 after her own son died when he was just one day old.

It was designed specially to be part of a the International Wave of Light service, during which people across the world light candles for children they have lost creating a moving barrier of light around the world.

The Slough service was attended by the Mayor Cllr Paul Sohal and 26 members of the Burnham based Pop Goes the Choir leant their singing voices to the occasion.

It was the fourth Wave of Light event organised by the Vishaal Foundation.

Cllr Bedi said: "When people have lost a child the love remains. We don't get to hold them in our arms but we do in our hearts.

"There were over 100 candles and each one represented a child - a very sad statistic.

"So many people look forward to attending the Wave of Light - it is a place of total understanding, peaceful and truthful."

She said the presence of the singers from Pop Goes the Choir had added a great deal.

"We had 10 of them here last year but it was 26 this time and they sang all through, beautiful songs that could appeal to all faiths and beliefs - it added so much."

She thanked Rob Deeks the chief executive officer of the youth group Aik Saath which was founded to bring young people together and whose members came along to help set up the lanterns with the candles.

The event was financed by Sargeant's Funeral Directors, whose manager Mark Clements is chairman of the Vishaal Foundation.
