The row over begging in Windsor has taken a new turn - following a call for a vote of no confidence debate in council leader Simon Dudley.

Cllr Dudley hit the headlines when he wrote to police and crime commissioner Anthony Stanfeld, calling for stronger police action against 'aggressive begging and intimidation' in Windsor.

It has led to an angry backlash with some accusing Cllr Dudley of taking a heartless attitude to the homeless. A petition objecting to his letter attracted 33,000 names.

Now opposition councillor Wisdom Da Costa (West Windsor Residents Association: Clewer North) has issued a statement saying: "Today, we, the opposition group have requested a motion of no confidence in the leader of the council, following the events of the last week instigated by a letter from the Leader, which has inter alia brought the council and councillors into disrepute."

His fellow opposition members are Cllrs Malcolm Beer and Lynne Jones (Independent, Old Windsor), Charles Hollingworth (Independent: Pinkneys Green), Claire Stretton (Independent: Boyn Hill) and Simon Werner (Lib Dem: Boyn Hill)
