FIREFIGHTERS were called to a boiler fire on a canal boat on the River Thames.

At around 3.10pm today, one pump from Windsor fire station, one pump from Slough fire station, a 4x4 vehicle from Maidenhead and a water rescue boat from Beaconsfield all attended the scene behind Windsor Leisure Centre in Stovell Road.

Firefighters spent one-and-a-half hours at the scene, where they were able to isolate the fire in the boiler area of the boat before extinguishing it and carrying out a safety inspection. The boiler room suffered small fire damage and smoke damage.

People on board the boat at the time were safely assisted on to the river bank by the fire and rescue service.
