AN ARCHITECT has been commissioned to design a plan for the Windsor Link Railway.

James Armitage Architects has been chosen to produce an indicative masterplan and design ideas for the proposed railway.

The company specialises in traditional and classic architecture and is part of the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community Professional Network.

It is hoped that this work will give residents a better understanding of what is proposed, both as block models and photo-realistic computer generated images.

The privately funded project would connect Windsor’s two train stations, bringing together the Great Western and South West Trains franchise areas and potentially linking both to Heathrow Airport.

The project is promoted by Windsor Link Railway Limited (WLR), led by businessman and Royal Borough councillor George Bathurst and would necessitate the creation of a short tunnel through central Windsor which would house the one new station.

The scheme also suggests restoring a railway station at Chalvey.

The actual designs for the Windsor Link Railway will be based on what residents want, using an 'Enquiry by Design' process, holding consultations. Subject to the agreement of the Royal Borough, this process could be held later this year.
