A NEW initiative encouraging residents, shops, businesses, clubs, organisations and schools to take to the streets to collect litter has been given the seal of approval.

The adopt-a-street scheme, designed to encourage volunteers to collect litter from their local area, was unanimously approved by the Royal Borough's cabinet at a meeting on Thursday last week.

Leader of the council, Cllr David Burbage, said: "I think this will tick all the boxes and enhance the community and make the borough a better place. I am very happy we are bringing this forward." A six-month pilot scheme is expected to be rolled out across the borough in January. The council will provide volunteers with equipment such as litter pickers, gloves, high visibility vests, plastic bags and relevant training.
