MICK WOODHAM insists that Windsor are in a good place despite being held to pre-season draws by Holmer Green and Virginia Water.

Spartans League Premier Division side Holmer Green drew 1-1 with Windsor on Saturday, before the honours were shared with Stag Meadow tennants Virginia Water, newly-promoted to the Hellenic League, on Tuesday.

Woodham admits that Windsor still need a spark but he is not concerned his team have failed to produce a full 90-minute performance with the start of the new season less than two weeks away.

Speaking to the Observer after the 1-1 draw with Virginia Water in Midweek, Woodham explained: “It was a dog’s dinner really. We’ve not put a 90-minute performance together yet in this pre-season, which is fine.

“Against Virginia Water we were okay for 45 minutes and then we just wanted to come out for the second half and impose ourselves, but didn’t really.

“We didn’t lose our way but they looked like the team more likely to score in the second half in fairness.

“We’re okay, we’ve had a look at a few more people and will go from here. There are no negatives really, we didn’t get beat so we’re happy enough.

“We were very good in the first 45 minutes and you could see the confidence from the moment we score.

“We finished the half in good shape and had a lot of possession all through the game as well, but again it was just the final ball and bits and pieces around the box.

“We needed a spark and we probably still need a spark, but we will keep on working hard and see what we come up against.

“We knew it would be difficult on Tuesday and made some changes with Saturday to look at. Some boys had some good minutes, the subs had 35 minutes really, so we’re all happy.

“I’m not scoring points and had we got beat I would have had no complaints because they had a few good chances at the end. Mind you having said that so did we. Gus Bowles should have scored and we had one right at the death, but a draw is fine.

“It’s pre-season and there was a good crowd and a good pitch, so we are alright.”

Woodham continued: “It’s very difficult in pre-season. If we could get a 90-minute performance out of us then the standard is set. Then we have got to go and deliver another one and you get disappointed when you don’t, so at the moment we’re in a good place and we will keep plodding on.

“It’s pre-season and we’re not at full volume and I don’t expect the boys to be really, but we are getting close to where we need to be.

“We need to step it up on Saturday and obviously with Slough coming next Tuesday we need to smarten ourselves up a little bit.”

Windsor travel to Spartan League Division Two club Amersham Town this Saturday (1pm) before a visit to Stag Meadow from rivals Slough Town on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Woodham said: “It will be a step up from last week, so we will go into Saturday with a nice mindset looking to win, but really August 5 is where we’re heading for.”
