KEITH Scott has warned his title-chasing Windsor & Eton players they are still a "million miles away" from landing the Zamaretto League Division One South & West crown.

The Royalists will clinch the title from under the noses of chief rivals AFC Totton if they win their last three fixtures.

Scott's men were due to face tenants Bedford Green at Stag Meadow on Thursday before travelling to whipping boys Bracknell Town this Saturday (3pm ko).

And if they win those two games Windsor can wrap up the championship by beating VT FC at home on Monday night (7.45pm).

But Scott knows how dangerous it is to look too far ahead: "We're close to achieving our aim which is promotion but we're also a million miles away," he declared.

"If we win our next three we've done it and there's nothing Totton can do. But we aren't there yet and we're taking it one game at a time."

Few people would bet against Windsor winning all three to finish top given their excellent form this season.

But the title race is much closer than it looked two months ago when the Royalists boasted what seemed an unassailable lead.

"People were getting carried away when we were 17 points clear," explained Scott. "The only people who weren't were myself and the players because we knew Totton had all those games in hand.

"I was under no illusion, I knew this would go down to the wire.

"But at the start of the season if someone had said that after 39 games we would need to win the last three to finish champions I would have taken that. It's in our own hands."

If Windsor get the job done they will be indebted to the goals of striker Michael Chennells.

They suffered a recent wobble when they drew with Totton and lost to Bishops Cleeve, throwing the title race wide open again.

But Scott's men were back on track in a 1-0 victory at Uxbridge last Thursday and a 2-0 home victory against Abingdon United on the weekend with Chennells bagging all three goals.

"They were two crucial wins for us," added Scott. "To bounce back like that following the draw with Totton and defeat at Bishops Cleeve showed the tremendous character and mental strength of my players.

"Michael is a fantastic player and deserves a chance at professional level. Not only does he score 30 goals a season, he scores important ones too."

Chennells must be licking his lips at the prospect of facing basement boys Bracknell at Larges Lane this Saturday, who have shipped 178 goals this season.
