Joe Chandiram fired the winner.

JOE Chandiram steered Windsor & Eton back on course as he fired home the only goal of the game at Taunton Town on Tuesday night.

The Royalists' gap at the top of the Southern League Division One South & West had been cut following two defeats on the bounce but they battled to victory in Somerset.

"It was important that we got a result, purely and simply because we want to win games," said manager Keith Scott.

The first half saw little action until Alexis Piper was denied an opportunity by Dave Woozley's defending.

Woozley then went close to scoring for Windsor but his header from a Bruce Wilson cross was off target.

Six minutes into the second half Bruce Wilson found Chandiram who struck the ball across the keeper into the far corner.

John Harris came close to an equaliser for the inform hosts, while at the death debutant keeper James Courtnage denied Lee Hawkins to ensure the win.

"We showed great desire and commitment to win," remarked Scott.

"To be fair, I thought it was business as usual for us. They are a side on a good run and they worked hard and were a threat from set-pieces, especially with a guy who had a throw similar to Rory Delap's.

"The new keeper came in and was exceptional, his communication, handling, everything was top drawer.

"James Courtnage is dual registered with us, he was the Staines number one when they got promoted to the Conference South.

"I've spoken to him and Steve (Cordery) the manager and he is due to play for us until the end of the season unless the Staines number one gets injured, but hopefully he won't.

"If he does and they recall him I've spoken to one or two others who could come in."

Next up for Windsor is a trip to Bishops Cleeve on Saturday, followed up by a home game with VTFC on Tuesday night.

Scott added: "Bishops Cleeve will be quite direct and physical and VT have picked up of late and are a very good footballing side, they will be contrasting games."
