THERE will be no festive cheer at The Hangar this Christmas after Slough Jets ended the calendar year with a double defeat against Milton Keynes Lightning.

Slough are going through a period of transition as new head coach Craig Moran tackles the task of rebuilding the team in mid-season.

But, with Moran away in the United States until the New Year, Jets were struck down7-1 by a rampant Lightning side at the Coventry Skydome on Saturday.

The hosts raced into an unassailable lead when Janne Jokila and Tom Carlon both struck twice and Ross Bowers netted between the pipes.

Brandon Miles capitalised on good work from Conor Redmond and debutante Liam Underdown to pull one back at 17.37, his first Jets goal.

But Lightning made the points safe with two further strikes midway through the final stanza. Jamie Jamieson made it 6-1 at 50.30 and Blaz Emersic completed the rout 13 seconds later.

Slough produced a far more spirited performance back on home ice on Sunday, going down 7-4 in their final game of year.

Jets forward Ales Padelek put the puck past netminder Stephen Wall for the game’s opening goal inside three minutes.

However, Carlon netted twice to ensure Lightning took a narrow lead into the break, which they extended through Emersic and Michael Farn early in the second period.

Padelek reduced the deficit with his second at 28.34 and Kamil Tvrdek drew Slough level in the 35th minute.

The visitors, though, were not to be denied and Grant McPherson, Stanislav Lascek and Lukas Zatopek all netted in the final stanza to secure victory.

To their credit, Jets stuck to the task and salvaged some pride when Andrius Kaminskas bagged a consolation goal at 53.13.

Slough remain in fifth place in the English Premier Ice Hockey League and return to action against Telford Tigers at The Hangar on January 4 (6.30pm face/off).
