MAIDENHEAD RFC closed the gap on South West One leaders Cheltenham to just two points with an impressive 32-27 victory on Saturday.
In an enthralling nine-try contest, it was Cheltenham who took the lead when winger Richard Morris touched down after an eight-phase move.
Josh Herbert added the extras with a touchline conversion but Maidenhead struck back with Elliott Brown splitting the defence to score and Dave Hodgson levelling the scores.
Brown was yellow carded shortly after the restart, and Cheltenham took advantage of their numerical superiority to score a second try through Ben Hough.
Herbert's conversion restored the visitors' seven-point lead and although Jamie Townsend touched down for Maids, it was Cheltenham who led 14-12 at the break.
A yellow card to Phil Liebrandt at the start of the second-half hampered Cheltenham's efforts and Mark Muller crashed through the defence for an unconverted try.
Despite being down to 14 men, Cheltenham laid siege to the Maids line and were rewarded with a penalty from Herbert that levelled the scores.
Maidenhead caption Simon Cripps touched down to restore the home side's lead only for Cheltenham to hit back with an unconverted try from Hamish Wrafter.
With six minutes left Cripps grabbed another try to make it 32-22 and the visitors only had time to score once more through Charles Daniell.
Maidenhead will be looking to continue their promotion push when they travel to High Wycombe on Saturday (2.15pm ko).
