MAIDENHEAD RFC took a huge step toward promotion from South West One East with a 32-27 victory over league leaders Cheltenham at Braywick Park on Saturday.

The narrow win reduces the gap at the top of the table between the two sides to just two points with 11 games to go this season.

Elsewhere, the New Year could not have got off to a worse start for Slough and Phoenix Rugby Club's after both suffered heavy defeats on Saturday.

Slough's task of battling for survival in Southern Counties North became even more daunting after a heavy 65-5 defeat at promotion chasing Wootton Bassett, a result that leaves Paul Rendall's men 11 points adrift of safety.

Phoenix find themselves in a similar predicament in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier Division, now four points below safety after losing 28-3 to new league leaders Thatcham in the all-Berkshire derby at Institute Road.
