WINDSOR Dames will try to retain their National Junior Plate title for a third year running next season and push for promotion, according to Kate Hallett, writes Ryan Gibbs.

The Dames defeated Harrogate 17-0 at Wootton Bassett Rugby Club on Saturday to retain their crown for the second season running.

The final was memorable one for Windsor and ended their successful season on yet another high. The ladies section of the club has come a very long way in a short space of time.

Windsor applied pressure from the start despite not having a chance to warm up beforehand due to a traffic jam.

It didn’t stop Gilly Thomas from scoring the first try of the game within the first 10 minutes.

This built momentum within the squad and, after a display of great passing and a strong defensive performance, Rachel Humphreys and Jess O’Sullivan both added to the scoresheet with tries to secure the win.

Hallett believes this was a fair result. She told the Observer: “We worked very hard to not let them score throughout the whole game. We defended very well and scored great team tries.

“Harrogate were a strong, physical side so we had to make decisions quickly, but we reacted very well.”

After such a physical game, Windsor were relieved when it was over. Hallett added: “We were relieved the game was over and very happy.

“There was a lot of emotion as it was the first time in a final for a few of the squad, and for others to do it again was brilliant.”

The Dames will be looking to continue their good form into next season and will be working on the squad. Hallet said: “Over the summer we will be making a lot of changes in personnel.

“We have new cracking prospects that have joined this season, and will also be looking to attract a bit of experience.

“We’re at the building stage. Our aim for next season is to go for the cup again and try to finish in the top three in the league, then push for promotion.”

Windsor Dames host The Berkshire Cup on Sunday at Home Park which includes five teams from Berkshire, the tournament starts at 1:30pm.
