THE first winner of the prestigious Wentworth Golf Bursary is Jon Putman.

Launched this academic year following the establishment of a new partnership between Royal Holloway, University of London and the Wentworth Club, the scholarship will be a huge boost for the aspiring golfer.

Following his successful application for the full golf membership bursary, Putman has been granted access to all three championship courses at the club, as well as the accompanying sporting and social facilities.

Putman, who plays off a handicap of one, is a second year management student and a member of the Student Talented Athlete Recognition Scheme (STARS) at the college.

Royal Holloway established STARS in 1996 to provide bursaries and academic support to assist student elite athletes during their studies. Since the initiative began, STARS has supported eight Olympians and Paralympians and over 60 athletes with world and national rankings.

Putman commented: "I am delighted to have been chosen as the recipient of this scholarship from Wentworth Club. I hope playing on the internationally-respected courses there will inspire the continued development of my golf skills and help me realise my long term goal of qualifying for the European Golf Tour following graduation."

Wentworth's chief executive, Julian Small said: "We are delighted to give Jon the opportunity to become a member of Wentworth and continue to develop his game of golf here."
