ALPHA Arms Academicals' cup jinx came to an end in dramatic style as their 'A' team triumphed in the Brian Goom Cup final on Sunday.

They beat Cippenham Royal British Legion 4-3 after extra time at Windsor & Eton's Stag Meadow having suffered two disappointments already this year.

The final got off to a good start for the Alpha 'A' boys as they went close through Shane Powell and Dean Toombs but a lapse in concentration gifted Cippenham the lead.

It wasn't long before Alpha got back on level terms with Powell coolly nodding in the equaliser after 25 minutes and then went on to dominate the rest of the half with no joy as Martin Cox and Powell had goals ruled out for offside.

Sean Robinson's header was cleared off the Cippenham line but they started the second half brighter and were awarded a penalty 10 minutes in only for Rob Borthwick to make a fine save to keep the scores level.

Lawrie Toombs was sent off moments later for barging an opponent to the floor and Cippenham capitalised on their numerical advantage to take the lead.

A scorcher from Matthew Clark was ruled out but the 10 men did not give up and equalised against the odds when Dean Toombs popped up with a goal in the 82nd minute.

Both sides had a go in extra time and Cippenham regained the lead only for substitute Mohamud Gumzy Jamba to beat four players before netting a screamer to equalise.

With five minutes left man of the match Powell scored a cracker to give Alpha a 4-3 win and the Brian Goom Cup.

Player/manager Denis Bulman said: "All the lads gave everything in the final, some of our lads were nervous as it was a few of their first cup finals but didn't show it.

"We did it the hard way. I am proud of every single player on my team today who showed the heart and desire to never give up despite being against the odds."
