ROB Saunders has joined Ascot United until the end of the season at least.

The midfield maestro who joined Burnham in the summer from Conference South giants AFC Wimbledon having impressed at Farnborough stepped down to join the Blues but it did not work out.

Windsor & Eton boss Keith Scott tried to attract him to Stag Meadow during pre-season but categorically ruled himself out of the running for the player on Wednesday afternoon, saying 'I'm not interested' and Steve Bateman had expressed a brief interest in speaking to the player who has decided to join his friends at the Hellenic Premier League strugglers.

Ascot United boss Stuart Scammell said : "He has committed his future to Ascot until the end of the season at least. Rob is a quality player and I have known him for a long time.

"I was watching him play for AFC Wimbledon in the Conference South earlier this season, so that shows the calibre of player we are bringing in.

"Obviously he has been playing at a higher level the last few years, but he is an Ascot boy and he wants to start enjoying his football again.

"We are very good friends and a lot of his mates play for us. For a club at our level to sign a player like him is a bit of a minor miracle really.

"He has a wealth of experience. He could be the bit of quality we need. He could be the catalyst to turn things around, but it is not all about him. It is also about the other nine players that are on the pitch with him."
