DATCHET Village have reached the Roy Lester Memorial Trophy final this season after a 5-0 win at Microblast 17 on Sunday.

Two goals from Jack Sanderson plus strikes by Barry Dunbar, Billy Davies and Spencer Taffurelli guided the Villagers to victory at the Garrison Sports Ground in Windsor.

Datchet manager Charlie Norcott told the Observer: “Microblast were the better side in the first half. They seemed to be more up for it and we were not at the races. We started off badly and then grew into the game in the second half.

“We had a good team talk during half-time and the boys wanted it more in the second half.

“A bit of fitness proved invaluable because Microblast were dead on their feet in the second half and our substitutions really killed them to be honest.

“It was not as easy as the scoreline sounds. Microblast showed grit, guts and determination and were the better side in the first half.

“We scored against the run of play in the first half on a pitch that was not great. It was wet at one end and dry at the other.

“It was completely different to attack the dry end in the second half, but it was the same for both sides.

“Microblast are a young side and it’s their first time in the league. They gave a good account of themselves but we had too much quality and it showed in the end, but against one of the top four clubs it might have been a different story.”

Datchet will play either Langley Galaxy or FC Bentons in the final at Stag Meadow later on this season.

Norcott said: "We beat Langley Galaxy earlier in the season and play them on Sunday.

"We've lost three times to Bentons so they seem to be our bogey side.

"We've got something to play for now and I will be telling the players that. Now the players will be more hungry for places in the final.

"We think we can win it if we play like we did in the 7-1 quarter-final win against Real Milan.

"The players will be at training and we do believe we can win it. We've got the belief and have a good side so we feel quite confident."

The Villagers return to action in Division One with a trip to Langley Galaxy this Saturday (10.30am) in a match that could prove pivotal in the race for second place.

Norcott commented: "We blew the league when Bentons beat us. We conceded a sloppy goal and lost 3-0.

"Next season we will definitely be aiming to win it, but second position is our target this season because I think Bentons will win it.

"The game on Sunday is for the top two and if we avoid defeat it will be a great result.

"Second or third place would be a good result and we've got into a cup final. I would have bit your hand off for that at the start of the season."

He added: "Langley Galaxy are a very good young side that have been together for a while. They play good football so it will be a very tough game, and if we avoid defeat I will be very happy.

"We need a better performance from last weekend because we've got something to play for, a place in the starting line-up for the final.

"Second or third would be the highest finish the club has ever had so we're making history."
