THE annual Windsor Youth Football Tournament took place during a weekend of celebration in the town for Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday.

As the town celebrated The Queen’s long service to our country, Windsor Youth commemorated the long service of one of its founding members, Tony Oorloff.

Mr Oorloff was instrumental in the development of youth football in Windsor and will be greatly missed by the club and players.

Although wet weather almost threw a spanner in the works, the great British spirit saw the event through to a conclusion on Sunday evening.

There was no Leicester City-style shock results in the tournament, but there was quality and competitive matches to watch in all age groups, from under-seven up to under-16.

There were around 200 teams competing in more than 400 matches, with more than 2,000 visitors from local leagues and all over the country, from Southampton to Derby.

While everyone enjoys the tournament for the fantastic football and entertainment it provides, it is also the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

It allows Windsor to promote its chosen charity The Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice and further the development of youth football in the town.

This year Windsor Youth supported its first girls’ team and were delighted when they won both a cup and the local league.

The girls played a round robin event, with the top two teams winning trophies and all other team players receiving medals.

The club now hopes to build on this success and introduce girls’ teams into other age groups.

Additionally, Windsor Youth continues to be one of the most successful providers of opportunities for youth participation in physical activity within the area.

The demographics of both the officers and players reflects the cultural and social diversity of the area.

Around 100 unpaid local volunteers toiled together in sun and rain to put on this event for the whole community.

Windsor are grateful to their club sponsors this year, Centrica, which benefits the whole community with its generosity.

Thanks must also go to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, which has again provided the perfect venue to hold the tournament, and also to New Windsor Community Centre for use of its facilities.

The feedback Windsor got from visiting teams was positive, mainly that they appreciated that every team went through to the knockout stages, with an equal chance of winning one of three trophies.
