LISSIE McLeod enhanced her reputation as one of the promising young cricketers in the country with a superb innings for Berkshire in their Women's County Championship game against Middlesex at Henley on Sunday.

The Ascot-born 17-year-old hit 81 out of Berkshire's total of 191.

A member of the England Academy squad, Lissie is also a useful spin bowler and has received coaching from former England bowler Jack Birkenshaw.

She is a reserve for the full England team that will tour South Africa in October.

Included in the 14-strong squad are Berkshire team-mates Isha Guha and Heather Knight.

Skipper Guha made 43 and shared a second-wicket stand of 92 with McLeod against Middlesex in a match reduced to 40 overs-a-side because of rain.

But Berkshire fell 27 runs short as they replied to Middlesex's 218-5, which was largely due to an innings of 106 from England player Beth Morgan.

Morgan is the reserve batsman for the South African tour while McLeod is the standby bowler.

This was Berkshire's last championship fixture of the season and they have retained their status as the only minor county in Division One.

Next Sunday they defend their national T/20 County Championship title at Radlett CC.

Guha and her team will be up against Kent, Sussex and Yorkshire, the same counties who reached finals day last year.

Former England star Claire Taylor plans to come out of cricket retirement to play for Berkshire.
