DATCHET were knocked off the top of the Division 2a table after suffering their second defeat of the season at the hands of Basingstoke & North Hants 2nd's.

Basingstoke captain Lee Nurse won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that looked to have backfired when Andy Dick and James Lambert reduced them to 61-5.

Joe McDonnell hit 36 before a seventh wicket partnership of 88 between Andy Darmody (65no) and wicket-keeper Lawrence Benge (49) lifted them to 187.

Darmody and Muhammad Rizwan (30) then put on 58 for the eighth wicket leaving the visitors to chase 247. Datchet's run chase did not get off to the best of starts when openers Nick Tilley and Adam Jones both failed to get into double figures.

Luke Sheppard (40) kept their hopes alive but wickets continued to fall, and when he was bowled by McDonnell a further 151 was needed with four wickets remaining.

Callum Taylor (33) and Samuel Finn (54) put on 47 before McDonnell and Michael Vinn (5-38) cleaned up the tail for just 10 runs.

Elsewhere, Fleet picked up a 20 point win at Royal Ascot thanks largely to Andy Griffiths' innings of 102 putting them ten points clear at the top.

Tilley's men must now beat Finchampstead 2nds, who themselves are not out of the promotion race, in order to regain top spot.
