DATCHET's captain Nick Tilley says their defeat to Marlow might be just what the team needed so they buck up their ideas going into the final part of the season.

Datchet suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 95 runs short of Marlow's imposing target of 273-9.

Tilley's side remain in top spot in Division 2a despite the loss as fellow contenders Eversley also failed to secure the win against Fleet who are now just a point behind them in third place. The Datchet skipper was wary of the opposition before Saturday's match despite the side's lowly position in the league and Tilley conceded they were the better side on the day.

Marlow's batters put on a superb all-round performance to reach 273. They had a good opening stand which gave them a platform to build from as Graham Paskins top scored with 77. Reflecting on the performance Tilley said: "It was disappointing. We didn't bowl or field particularly well on a pretty flat wicket. We held it together until the last 10 overs before they got away from us.

"But we still backed ourselves with the bat. Kyrgiakos (Flouditis) and Tim (Alldis) were out relatively cheaply and we just capitulated."

He added: "It was a kick up the backside for us."

A below-par batting performance meant Datchet were dismissed for just 178. Luke Shepherd was the only notable scorer with the bat reaching 62 runs while bowling-wise it was Marlow's Lee Atkinson who was the chief tormentor taking 5-62.

Datchet will play bottom side Royal Ascot at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday hoping to get back to winning ways. However, Tilley will not be taking Nick Sweetman's side for granted. He said: "The loss will put us in the right frame of mind to play Ascot who are bottom. The defeat might just be what we needed to make sure we buck up our ideas."
