DATCHET skipper Nick Tilley was delighted with his side's start to the Thames Valley Division 2a season - but is under no illusions about the task that lies ahead.

The title-chasers produced a confident display to beat newly promoted Royal Ascot by 165 runs. But Tilley warned his side there are plenty of tougher test ahead.

He said: "It was an ideal start for us really. We didn't know what to expect from Ascot with them coming up last season.

"We lost a couple of early wickets but then Tim Alldis and Adam Jones dug in. It was pretty comfortable in the end and bodes well for the season. But there are much sterner tests ahead."

Datchet lost three early wickets as they were reduced to 61-3 before Alldis (102) and Adam Jones (69) produced a 148-run partnership to get them past the 200-mark. Luke Shepherd then added a quick-fire 39 as Tilley's side posted an imposing 280-9.

James Lambert (6-35) then made light work of the Ascot order and a six-wicket spell from James Dick (3-6) finished the visitors off.

Tilley added: "Our score was way beyond par on a slow outfield and we bowled and fielded really well."
