OLLIE Wilkin smashed his way into the Berkshire County Cricket Club's record books this week.

The 24-year-old batsman produced two remarkable innings on his debut in the Unicorns Championship game against Herefordshire at Colwall, scoring a total of 322 runs.

Wilkin, who has had first-class experience with Middlesex, hammered an unbeaten 159 in Berkshire's first innings of 276 all out.

And that was after he had been dropped in the slips first ball and offered another chance to the wicket-keeper two overs later.

After Herefordshire had been dismissed for 239, Wilkin returned to the crease to crash 163 in the second innings, helping Berkshire to declare on 411-5, leaving the home county with a little matter of needing 449 to win the game.

A century on his Berkshire debut may have been achieved before - although no-one can remember by whom and when - but it is unlikely if a player has made two centuries on his first appearance.

Club archivist Roy New said: "I will need to search back through the club's history, but there must be a very good chance that Ollie has broken two or three records. It was quite an unbelievable achievement."

Wilkin, 24, was released by Middlesex two years ago after suffering a shoulder injury and didn't play last season.

But the all-rounder has bounced back in extraordinarily fashion this season, hitting a century for MCC against the Minor Counties at Lord's in addition to scoring a double century for his club side, Ealing.

He played with Berkshire professional Chris Peploe at Ealing and again in the game at Lord's in April and when Berkshire found themselves last week looking for a replacement for the unavailable Michael Roberts, Wilkin came into consideration.

After his early lucky breaks on Sunday, Wilkin produced some truly awesome batting.

With wickets falling regularly at the other end, Wilkins was forced to hold back a little.

But he still smashed five sixes and 20 boundaries in his innings where he faced 167 deliveries, scoring off 68 of them.

The opener shared a seventh-wicket stand of 54 with Peploe (31) and 93 for the next wicket with Stewart Davison (38) as Berkshire improved from a shaky 107-6 to 276 all out in 61.4 overs.

While Wilkin was the stand out batsman, the bowling honours went to 17-year-old off-spinner Euan Woods who returned excellent figures of 24.1-7-69-6.

Peploe took 3-70 off 37 overs and Tom Nugent 1-43 off 15 as Herefordshire were dismissed for 239 in 88.1 overs.

It was then Wllkin's turn again to provide the ammunition to blast the home bowlers to pieces for the second day running, scoring even quicker than he had on Sunday.

He hammered balls out of the ground and one on to the roof of a house. He reached 50 off 27 balls, his century off 65 and 150 off 88.

Wilkin was eventually bowled for 163, having spent 117 minutes at the crease, during which he clobbered eight maximums and 17 fours.

He and Waqas Hussain (50) put on 130 for the first wicket in just 17 overs, while Richard Morris helped him to add 129 for the next wicket in 15 overs.

Richard (69) and brother James (59no) kept the runs flowing, while Woods hit three excellent fours in his 13 off as many balls and Dan Lincoln needed just 19 balls to score 36 not out before Berkshire declared to set a demoralised-looking Herefordshire side a daunting target of 449 on a wicket that was taking spin.

The match continues today.
