MORGAN Lake will not be returning to the heptathlon stage any time soon as the 20-year-old reveals she will be putting her full focus on the high jump in 2018.

The Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow athlete achieved a personal best in the high jump in 2017 as well as finishing sixth at the World Athletics Championships in London.

Lake became a world junior champion in 2014 in both high jump and heptathlon but admits she’ll be putting her full attention on high jump after a breakthrough 2017.

She said: “I’m not 100% sure [on the heptathlon]. I’m going to be doing the high jump at the Commonwealth Games in April next year and then we’ll see how that goes. I’ve got a new coach and moved to Loughborough so a lot has changed. But I want to see how that goes and see where I can take it.

“The last few years have been a bit hard because of the jump you make from junior to senior and the pressure of competition was quite big for me but then to go out there and get a personal best in 2017 is a huge boost going into the winter training.

“It has been a great year. The high jump at the London 2017 World Championships was just incredible. To come sixth at a competition like that, it was such a big event.

“Since starting in 2014 it has been quite a steady rise, but 2017 has felt like a real breakthrough year for sure.”

Next year looks like another busy schedule for the high jumping ace and Lake believes the confidence from coming sixth at the World Championships will help her achieve another personal best in 2018.

She said: “It gives you amazing confidence. We have the World Indoors in Birmingham which is close to where I live now. It’s a big home event for me after London last year.

“Having that similar environment is amazing. I’m looking forward to my first Commonwealths too in April. I didn’t get the chance in 2014, I went to the world juniors instead so to go to Australia, a place I’ve never competed in, is great.”
