WINDSOR, Slough, Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) forces were split over the weekend with members competing in County Cross Country Championships at various venues.

WSEH were hosts to the Berkshire Athletic Association Championships at Upton Court Park in Slough, where runners were greeted with wet and muddy conditions.

The local athletes overcame the hazards to provide the winners in four of the eight races.

In the senior men’s race, Alex Tovey led from start to finish to win by over two minutes ahead of his chasers in a time of 38 minutes and 52 seconds (38.52). Simon Millett also got amongst the medals with his third place in 41.27.

Charlotte Firth led the charge in the senior ladies’ race to win in 27.31. Nicole Swaffied was just out of the medals in fourth place in 29.35.

WSEH success continued in the Under-20 (U20) age group with Felicity Johnson taking the title in 23.01. Tilly Compton-Stewart was also amongst the medals with her third place in 24.11. Isabelle Rayner had a good run for fifth place in 25.09.

Dan Brookling had his best run to date to win the U15 boys’ race in 13.36, just ahead of silver medallist and training partner Shaun Hudson. They both lead the WSEH squad to gold team medals. Oliver McArthur (13th) and Matt Daines (18th) completed the team victory.

The WSEH U17 ladies were closely matched with Meg Ormond just getting the edge in sixth place in 24.51, with Alex Barbour seventh and Becky Pope eighth to secure the silver team medals.

WSEH were well represented in the U13 girls’ race with 13 finishers. Amy Young was the best of the bunch in a bronze medal-winning third place in 11.38. Lily Rolfe (5th), Isabelle Craven (13th) and Ella Van Heerde (14th) completed the silver-medal winning team.

The local U13 boys also claimed silver team medals. They were led by Rocco Hudson who emulated his brother’s silver in the U15 race with second place in 10.52. The team also contained Sam Hodgson (4th), Ross Van Heerde (6th), Will Goddard (19th) and Sam Mead (29th).

In the last race of the day there were more silver team medals for the U17 men with Jack Goddard leading the way in sixth place in 25.52, closely followed by Niall Unger in seventh and Matt Bradly in eighth place.

There was a small gap before the rest of the WSEH squad closed - Ben Hooper (12th), Martin Kopernicky (13th), Jack Davies (15th) and Paul Taplin (16th).

The best result for WSEH in the combined Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire Championships, held in Old Warden Park, was the gold-winning performance by Dominic McDougall in the U15 boys. He also led the WSEH team to bronze team awards.

There was also an individual bronze for Bill Hughes in the U20 men's event. Kate Thompson finished fourth in the U15 girls' competition.

WSEH travel to Wigmore Valley in Luton for the third match of the Chiltern Cross Country League series on Saturday.
