CHALVEY Sports Chairman Scott Young admits he felt absolutely elated after the club retained the Hellenic Division Two East title this season.

The Stabmonks won the title with four matches to spare in their first campaign as members of the Hellenic League last season, but did not have things all their own way time time around.

Having moved into the multi-million pound Arbour Park Community Stadium in the summer, Chalvey were pushed all the way by runners-up by Abingdon United Development, before secure the title with a final-day win at Chinnor Reserves.

Young told the Observer: “We were pushed to the very last game to be fair, and it was a lot tougher and closer this year. We lost only one league game, like last season, but we drew too many.

“I’m feeling ecstatic that we’ve managed to retain the title, and in the manner we done so was absolutely great. I’m absolutely elated.

“Both title wins were very enjoyable but we didn’t have the luxury of winning it with four matches still to play this season.

“This year was more tense and to win the title right at the end of the season felt more like a cup final victory.

“To win any league title is a great achievement but two on the trot is even better.

“I enjoyed the title win more this season personally because it went right to the wire.

“We didn’t spend a lot of time at the top, maybe one or two weeks all season, due to fixture congestion and postponements.”

Asked if he ever doubted whether the Stabmonks could retain their crown, he said: “I suppose you do feel an element of doubt as things get tighter. It makes you a little bit nervous.

“You have to give the management and players a little bit of credit because they were committed and fully concentrated, so there was no need for me to worry.

“I did feel a little bit nervous because sometimes it’s easier to be at the top and set the pace rather than come from behind to win it.

“The players were absolutely determined and you could see that in every game to grind out results without playing well at times, like the 3-3 draw at home with Long Crendon. The players never gave up and equalised in the last minute of injury time.

"Everyone in the stadium was jumping with joy like we had just won the league with that goal. It’s moments like that you live for in sport."
