FC BENTONS coach Richie Goddard insists the race for the Division One title is not over despite his side strengthening their position at the top of the table on Sunday.

Bentons beat Maidenhead Crown 4-2 at Desborough Park to extend their lead over the chasing pack to 14 points.

Goddard believes the latest win has put Bentons in a good position but, with the chasing pack all having at least four matches in hand, he knows the title is not secure yet.

He told the Observer: “We will not get ahead of ourselves at all and just take it game by game, like we’ve done all season, and let our football do the talking.

“We’re fortunate in the fact that our cups games have not been cancelled, so we’ve played most of our league games and got points on the board.

“We still have games to come against Datchet and Langley so it is far from over, but it’s looking good for us at the moment.”

Looking back on the win against Maidenhead, Goddard said: “It was a game that was played on a very muddy surface at Desborough Park. It could have been a leveller but we got used to the conditions pretty quick and took control.

“Maidenhead put up a bit of a fight and had a few chances but the scoreline does flatter them a little. We dominated the game from start to finish.

“We’re used to playing on a 3G pitch, but the boys have been together for so long now it’s just a case of working hard and the rest will come naturally.”

Bentons turn their attention to the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup and a quarter-final tie against Reading Irish tat Langley Academy this Sunday (10.30am).

Goddard said: “With the togetherness of the boys in the squad and the quality we have in the team, we feel confident in every game we play.”

"We've heard Reading are a good side with a lot of semi-professional players but we back ourselves in any game.

"We will turn up in the morning and apply ourselves correctly."
