SLOUGH Scorpionz have made history to be crowned UK National five-a-side champions and win an all-expenses paid trip to Ibiza.

After a gruelling 10-week season playing in the Slough Powerleague, the Scorpionz won the league and, along with the runners-up, qualified for the National finals.

They were joined by another 14 teams from all over the UK who were looking to become five-a-side champions and win the prize of a trip to Ibiza.

Zufran Asghar has been running the Slough-based side for many years and put together a young team to compete in Barnet. The side consisted of returning keeper Bally Singh, Singh Sabha youngsters Pritpal Raju, Jovan Bains and Dillon Bains, plus ex-Windsor star Naheer Nawaf and Reading Academy player Hassan Munir.

The average age of the outfield players was just 18 but the Scorpionz went out with no fear and started the group stages well with a 4-1 win, before coming unstuck against tournament favourites Pro Evolution in a 2-1 defeat in the second match.

Slough won their remaining two games and qualified for the quarter-finals as runners-up in the group.

The Scorpionz faced a tough quarter-final against Step Daddys from Leeds, who took the lead, but two late goals from Nawaf ensured they went through despite playing two minutes of the game with a man down.

The semi-final saw them put up against fellow Slough-based side and rivals Dash, who came into the tournament as underdogs, and took an early lead.

Two goals from Nawaf plus a Monir strike put the Scorpionz 3-1 ahead before Dash pulled a goal back with a minute still to play. However, Scorpionz had the final say as Jovan Bains sealed the victory and set up a final with Pro Evolution.

Slough were much more disciplined in the final and sat back with excellent keeping from Singh keeping them in what was a very tactical match.

The Scorpionz were happy to play for the draw and take it to penalties but, with only two minutes remaining, they got lucky as a Nawaf shot was misjudged by the Evolution keeper and the ball nestled in the back of the net.

Slough sealed the victory late on as Nawaf put through Monir to score with his left foot and secure the Scorpionz a deserved first-ever national tournament win.

The team will now fly out to Ibiza later on this month for a paid-for holiday courtesy of Lucozade Powerleague.

It has been a tough few years for the team who have played in over 20 national five-a-side tournament finals up and down the country and finally come through as winners this time round, a huge relief for all involved.
